A Modern Yet Traditional Garden

Take a look at this garden in the countryside, where modern and traditional design elements sit side by side to create a space full of interest.

ALDA in Action

One of our latest projects involved creating a garden which sits comfortably in its traditional countryside setting, whilst taking on a contemporary feel.

Modern Elements of the Garden Include:

Angular Lines

These are seen in the straight edge planting borders as well as in the outline of the top patio under the contemporary black iron pergola.

The angular lines of the stepping stones are embeded in the lawn and lead to the modern statue and plinth.

Large Rectangular Limestone Paving

The paving slabs in Kato blue give an instant contemporary feel to the garden and sit well against the contemporary black bifold doors.

The grey limestone shingle complements the colour of the paving and has been used in between the stepping stones and for the surface topping of the pathway.

A sleek looking channel slot drain installed just below the landing outside the bi-fold doors ensures good drainage for the lower patio area.

Traditional Elements of the Garden Include:

Softwood Treated Sleeper Beds

The multilayered terraced beds are one of the stand-out features of the garden.  They create an ideal solution for the slope in this part of the garden and provide a natural break between the lower and upper parts.

The natural softwood sleepers tie in with the surrounding woodland setting and their generous size means there is ample space for our client to display an extensive range of planting.

Red Brick

Red brick has been used in the garden’s design to tie in with the house. The brick is used in the risers for the series of wide steps between the terraces, and also in the retaining wall on the left lower boundary.

Before and After:

The result is a neatly designed garden with a contemporary feel which welcomes the odd traditional touches in keeping with its countryside setting. Take a look at this before and after slider to see the changes:
