The brief: to create a garden that is an informal, relatively low maintenance space which sits well with both the contemporary house extension and the softer lines of the rest of the garden which has a simple elegance.
The design: the design focused around a wow factor patio to be viewed from inside the new extension. It was important to our client that the patio was laid flush with the new bi fold doors for a smooth transition from house to garden. Beautiful grey wood effect ‘Holz Grigio’ porcelain pavers were laid along the back of the house, continuing to the lower patios and used as treads to the steps down on to the lawn.
The second element to the design was to include interesting structural features to draw your eye into the other spaces within the garden, in particular to the new planting. Also key to this was to reshape the lawn and borders. A gentle curving pathway leading off the patio close to the house down to the bottom of the garden was installed using grey Brett alpha antique block pavers. Two softwood archways either side of the bench seat area add interest along the pathway, as well as the construction of a bespoke pergola above the bench seat on the patio. Extra seating was achieved by laying the beautiful porcelain pavers as a surface top to the brick retaining wall on the left side of the patio. The red bricks used for the retaining walls throughout the garden were carefully chosen to match those of the house.
The outcome: a beautiful garden of contemporary elegance, with new planting adding the finishing touches.
