This was a large garden in Maidenhead, sloping up hill to a copse. The garden had a swimming pool on the left hand side, which literally came to within a metre or so of the house.
The new design entailed decommissioning and removing the swimming pool, and pushing back the brick retaining wall near the house to create a new terrace near the house on the left hand side, and a hot tub on the right hand side, with steps up in between. The swimming pool was replaced by a simple semi formal lawn and borders, with a single pergola running inside the boundary to add privacy, which widens into an arboured sitting area in the centre.
Next to this is the main terrace in the garden. From this level the garden continues through a stepped arch way to the main (and less formal) lawn. Our client wanted a more level area of lawn here, so there was a considerable amount of earth moving. The change of levels (retained by log palisade raised beds) meant that the right hand side of the garden is higher than the main lawn, and allowed us to create a high level grassy walkway which runs along to an elevated seat area, before sweeping down to join the main lawn (click on the plan to view the layout).
This was a large project, and the levelling and hard landscaping was undertaken over several very wet winter months, with water cascading down the hill from the copse! To enable work to continue, land drains were installed. Nevertheless, it took a month or two after the hard landscaping was completed before we could undertake the soft landscaping, laying the new lawns and installing planting.
The garden is looking wonderful, everything has come out and a few things I didn’t expect!!
