A Very Victorian Path

A Victorian look black and white tiled path transforms a front garden in Reading…

The problem

An uneven and tired-looking path, which is not in keeping with our client’s Victorian terraced property. Made up of quarry tiles with large joints in between, the old path zig zagged randomly off to the left to make way for a large rock. This did little to enhance the approach to the front door, and negotiating the uneven surface had the potential to cause issues for the postman and other visitors! The front garden to the left of the path is in need of attention with its overgrown beds and neglected shingle surface.

Our brief

To restore some character and curb appeal and to make this area more accessible for bin storage.

The solution

We laid a stunning new path and landscaped the garden with a new paving design to create a frontage with impact.

The first task was to break up the existing concrete and remove the quarry tiles and clear the site. Next we installed a concrete base 4” deep and laid the replica Victorian black and white tiles (150mm squared) in a diamond pattern and edged with a matching border.

To the left of the path a new area of paving was laid using large black Brazilian tiles as per Alison’s design plan. A square shaped planting bed in the middle of the paving is centred to the bay window to provide an outlook onto the garden from inside the house, and with the intention to plant some box hedging in the Spring to tie in with the traditional theme.

The brief is fulfilled – our client now has a front garden with curb appeal and which compliments their period property.

By replacing the old shingle with the Brazilian tiles there is now a smooth surface to enable easy manoeuvring of the bins, fulfilling another element in our client’s brief.

Replica Victorian tiles are easy to source at the moment and we got these particular ones from Walls and Floors (01536 314730).
