Trend Predictions for 2025

As the new year begins, let’s take a look at what the new trends for 2025 may be.

The focus in the design world this year seems to be on gardening in a changing environment, nurturing nature and looking after our personal wellbeing. These interelating concepts and practices are not new, but this year they’ve come to the forefront for new and innovative approaches to design.

Below are 8 trends that we think many people will be embracing in 2025…

A Wilder Appproach

  • Clean lines, structured, ultra-modern layouts with restrained colour palettes have been a popular design choice for urban landscaping for quite a while now, but in the last year or so designers and the public have been leaning into the more naturalistic and less structured designs.
  • Sweeping, natural lines would replace the straight geometric shapes and maximalist planting, with full, less contained, planting beds and a wide range of colour and texture to replace the ‘designed’ neutral palettes of the past.
  • This also means welcoming more wildlife into our private spaces and being a little less tidy in our gardens.

Repurposing Materials

  • Repurposing and reusing materials is becoming a popular choice in public spaces and is seen as a sustainable approach to creating resilient landscaping.
  • More people may adopt this concept in their private gardens as they become more conscious of their impact on the environment. From recycled crushed concrete and reclaimed paving to repurposed containers.

Vertical Gardening

  • With new build gardens becoming ever smaller, vertical gardening could be an innovative solution to maximise limited space.
  • Living walls and green roofs have been around for a while now and have become more common in public spaces.
  • As the development of these systems improves and grows, their application on a smaller scale is becoming popular.

Wellness Gardens

  • The importance of our interaction with the outdoors for our mental health and wellbeing has been a focus for garden design in the last few years and this year this trend seems to be continuing.
  • The focus is garden design with relaxation in mind, which may include new concepts such as forest gardens.

Extensions of the Home

  • Gardens are increasingly being seen as valuable assets to our homes. Alongside this, the building industry are now recognising that elements of nature need to be incorporated into the built environment. Indeed, biophilic design is now becoming a popular principle for designers.
  • This trend goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about crafting multifunctional spaces to meet our needs for relaxation whilst reconnecting with nature.

Sustainable Practices

  • With sustainability becoming part of our everyday lives, it is no surprise that adopting and designing sustainable practices into our garden is becoming a popular trend.
  • Sustainability will make the list of requirements when designing any style of garden. From using water saving methods, planting more native species, to new ways of gardening such as the ‘no-dig method.

Productive Outdoor Spaces

  • Making the most of our gardens is all the more important with the shift in how much time we spend at home since 2019.
  • In the last year I have seen an increase in requests to design outdoor kitchens/BBQ spaces, multifunctional seating areas, as well as raised beds for vegetable growing. It seems this trend will continue.

Smart Gardening

  • Technology continues to innovate the way we garden, and 2025 will see an increase in the demand for technology to be integrated into designs.
  • From automated watering systems to app-controlled garden lighting, integrated solar panels and robot mowers, these advancements allow for more efficient and effective garden management.
